Alyssa Deyo, a single mother who was unemployed and unable to meet her financial obligations, contacted the Arkansas Workforce Center in Conway on September 2, 2020, during the COVID-19 epidemic. She desired success not only to better herself, but also to provide for her children and set a good example for them. However, she lacked the necessary experience and education to secure a long-term career and needed to learn new job skills.
Excited to take advantage of the WIOA Youth Program, Alyssa attended multiple Job Readiness workshops that addressed workplace etiquette, interviewing and soft skills, how to design a resume, leadership development, time management, financial literacy, and other topics.
In addition, she was also linked with some of our partners, who provided further assistance to help with the confusion and stress of landing that perfect job. The Arkansas Division of Workforce Services was able to enroll Alyssa in their Transitional Employment Assistance program, which provided childcare assistance, and the Arkansas Department of Human Services was able to enroll her in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which provided food assistance to her family and provided her with nutrition education.
She persevered, and in June 2021, with the assistance of the WIOA Youth program and other supportive services, she secured a bright future for her family by taking full-time employment with Hilton Hotels.
In the end, Alyssa was able to improve her income during the epidemic and secure a position in an industry in which she is interested in pursuing a career! She noted that the WIOA Youth Program helped her through the steps to overcome the stress of finding a job in the midst of the pandemic.
